Description

Function and technical context

This aluminum anode for Caterpillar engines acts as a sacrificial element within the boat's cathodic protection system, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise destroy noble metal components such as the tailshaft, propeller, hull or heat exchanger. With a diameter of 10 mm and a length of 38 mm with 1/4W thread, this anode is installed directly on metal surfaces of the engine or hull exposed to salt, brackish or fresh water. Cathodic protection is especially critical in installations with metals of different natures in contact with water, where electrolytic corrosion can advance silently and cause serious structural damage in a few weeks. As it is an aluminum alloy, this anode is best suited for salty and brackish waters, offering effective and prolonged protection against zinc in demanding marine environments.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, as below that level they no longer offer effective protection. An unequivocal sign that the anode has exhausted its useful life is to find it greatly reduced, disintegrated or completely missing, which implies that the components it protects will have already begun to suffer corrosion. Professional advice is to always replace all anodes when taking the boat ashore for the winter or at the beginning of each season, thus avoiding costly repairs to the hull, propeller or engine due to advanced corrosion.
