Description

Function and technical context

The Caterpillar aluminum anode with reference 2283, with a diameter of 10 mm and a length of 55 mm, acts as a galvanic sacrifice in marine engines and propulsion groups exposed to salt or brackish water. Its function is to concentrate on itself the electrochemical corrosion process that would otherwise attack structural metal components of the engine or propulsion system such as liners, cooling manifolds or transmission housings. The aluminum alloy used in this anode makes it especially suitable for use in salt and mixed water, offering a greater electrochemical current capacity per unit mass compared to zinc anodes in high conductivity environments. Without a properly installed functional anode, galvanic corrosion can silently progress to cause irreversible damage to high-cost and difficult-to-access parts.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that a sacrificial anode needs replacement is the reduction in mass of around 50% compared to the initial size: when the anode appears very worn, fragmented or has completely disappeared, the cathodic protection of the engine is compromised. It is recommended to inspect and replace the anodes at least once per nautical season, or more frequently if the boat remains moored in ports with high electrical activity or especially aggressive waters. Preventively replacing the anode at each grounding or seasonal inspection avoids discovering advanced corrosion in structural components of the engine when there is no longer an economic solution.
