Description

Function and technical context

The anode plug for Caterpillar engines is a cathodic protection element installed in the engine block or in strategic points of the seawater cooling system, whose mission is to be electrochemically sacrificed to prevent galvanic corrosion in the metal parts of the engine. Made of zinc or sacrificial alloy, it acts as a negative electrode that attracts corrosion instead of it affecting critical components such as the block, heat exchanger or cylinder head. Without proper cathodic protection, ferrous and alloy metals in the engine are exposed to electrolysis caused by salt or brackish water, which can lead to punctures, coolant leaks, and serious breakdowns that are costly to repair. The plug format allows direct installation in threaded holes of the cooling circuit or block, thus combining the waterproof closure function with galvanic protection.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost between 50% and 60% of their mass, since below that volume they no longer offer effective protection. Symptoms of a depleted or missing anode include visible pitting on metal engine surfaces, accelerated corrosion on adjacent metal gaskets and plugs, and in advanced cases, punctures in the intercooler casing or block. It is recommended to preventively replace the anode plug at each seasonal inspection, especially in boats that navigate in waters with high salinity or that remain moored for long periods, to guarantee the integrity of the engine without taking unnecessary risks.
