TAPON ANODO CATERPILLAR 2280
Description
Function and technical context
The anode plug for Caterpillar engines performs a dual function within the cathodic protection system: it acts as a threaded sealing element in specific cavities of the block or cooling circuits, while incorporating sacrificial material—usually zinc or aluminum alloy—that preferably corrodes to protect the metal surfaces of the engine against galvanic corrosion. This component works directly in the seawater cooling circuit, where the mixture of different metals and salinity generate galvanic currents capable of deteriorating the block, cylinder heads and heat exchangers. Periodic replacement of the anode plug is therefore a critical preventive maintenance measure to preserve the structural integrity of the Caterpillar marine engine over the long term.
When to replace this part?
The symptoms of anode exhaustion are visible: the plug has more than 50% of the sacrificial material consumed, appears irregularly corroded or has lost mass significantly compared to its new state. It is recommended to inspect and replace the anode plug at least once per navigation season or every 200-300 hours of operation in salty or brackish waters, since an exhausted anode leaves the metal surfaces of the engine unprotected and can lead to deep corrosion that is difficult and expensive to repair. Replacing this element preventively at each annual tune-up is the common practice of naval mechanics to avoid irreversible structural damage to the propeller.
