Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is a critical component in the cathodic protection system of Yamaha outboard motors. Made of a zinc or aluminum alloy, it acts as an electrochemical barrier that corrodes in a controlled manner to protect the internal and external metal parts of the engine against accelerated oxidation caused by exposure to salt or fresh water. This passive galvanizing process prevents structural corrosion in cylinder heads, cylinder blocks, cooling pipes and powertrain components. Without a functional anode, aggressive water directly attacks the ferrous and non-ferrous metals of the engine, causing loss of mechanical integrity, internal leaks and premature breakdowns that compromise navigation reliability.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at the end of each boating season; When it presents significant visual erosion (50% reduction in volume) or color change to pale gray, the time has come to replace it to guarantee continuous protection. A depleted anode loses its ability to burn before the engine's structural metals, exposing cylinder heads, blocks and transmission accessories to accelerated corrosion. Preventive replacement before the start of the season is the recommended practice to avoid costly repairs in remote boating areas and preserve the value of the boat.
