YAMAHA ANODE 6E8-45251-02
Description
Function and technical context
The anode is a cathodic protection component that acts in the cooling system and hull of boats with outboard motors. Made of sacrificial material, it preferentially corrodes instead of the engine block and submerged metal surfaces, preventing galvanic corrosion from damaging critical components such as the cylinder head, cylinder block and fresh water passages. Its function is especially vital in salt water, where galvanic corrosion accelerates the deterioration of ferrous metals and alloys if there is no active protection. Without a functional anode, the engine suffers internal corrosion that can compromise the tightness of the cylinders and the structural integrity of the block in a matter of weeks.
When to replace this part?
The anode should be inspected at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replaced when it has lost 50-75% of its material, which generally occurs after 1-2 seasons depending on saltwater boating hours and salinity. The presence of visible corrosion in the engine block, excessive calcification in the water passages or whitish deposits in submerged areas are indicators that the anode has reached the end of its useful life. Preventive replacement before each season is the most recommended practice among owners of high-performance boats, since a worn anode exposes the engine to repairs worth thousands of euros that could be avoided with a low-cost preventive change.
