YAMAHA ANODE 9.9HP 4T
Description
Function and technical context
The sacrificial anode is an essential component of the cathodic protection system in Yamaha 9.9 hp marine engines. It is installed in submerged areas exposed to salt or brackish water, where it acts as an electrochemical barrier to prevent galvanic corrosion of aluminum and other engine structural metals. The anode oxidizes in a controlled manner instead of the base material, significantly extending the life of critical components such as the engine block, cylinder head and internal cooling systems. Without this active protection, electrochemical degradation would progress rapidly, compromising the tightness of the motor and generating premature breakdowns in areas that are difficult to access and costly to repair.
When to replace this part?
The anode must be inspected at the end of each navigation season and replaced when it shows visible erosion greater than 50% of its volume or when it shows severe spot corrosion. In salty or high mineral content waters, wear is significantly accelerated and may require replacement even before completing a full season, especially if the engine remains at anchor for long periods. Preventive replacement before each nautical campaign is the most recommended practice to avoid costly repairs of cylinders, cylinder heads or internal cooling systems that can represent an expense much higher than the cost of the anode.
