Description
Function and technical context
The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the cathodic protection system of Yamaha outboard motors. Made of zinc or aluminum, it degrades in a controlled manner instead of the engine's base metal, absorbing the electrochemical oxidation processes caused by salt or brackish water. This element works by protecting the engine block, cylinder head and the most critical internal parts against corrosion that would otherwise attack these vital metal surfaces. Its preventive presence prevents perforations, loss of tightness and structural failures that would result in extraordinarily expensive repairs.
When to replace this part?
The anode should be visually inspected at each seasonal maintenance and replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass or has a grainy, eroded surface. In saltwater, the typical lifespan is one to two active boating seasons; in fresh or brackish waters, it can spread further. Preventive replacement before it is completely used up is the best guarantee of motor protection, preventing corrosion from attacking the internal assembly once the anode has been completely consumed.
