Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the Yamaha marine engine cathodic protection system. Made of aluminum, it acts as a protective barrier against galvanic corrosion generated by salt water when it comes into contact with ferrous and non-ferrous metals in the engine. It preferably degrades instead of the vital parts of the engine block, cylinder head and cooling circuit, thus avoiding deep oxidation in critical components that would compromise the tightness and operation of the engine. Its presence is decisive in maintaining the structural integrity of the engine throughout the entire navigation season in seawater.

When to replace this part?

The aluminum anode requires visual inspection after each navigation season and must be replaced when it shows erosion of more than 50% of its mass or when it shows accelerated loss of material, typical symptoms of intensive exposure to salt water or contaminated waters. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each saltwater navigation period is the most recommended practice among boat owners, since the reduced cost of the part compared to engine repairs due to corrosion makes it a highly profitable maintenance measure. Not waiting for it to run out completely avoids critical situations where corrosion has advanced in internal areas of the cooling circuit.
