Description
Function and technical context
The sacrificial anode is a fundamental component in the cathodic protection of Yamaha marine engines. It is installed in strategic points of the engine block and cooling circuit, where contact between salt water and ferrous metals generates galvanic corrosion. This anode, made of zinc, preferentially oxidizes instead of the engine's aluminum and iron, absorbing corrosion and significantly prolonging the life of the internal parts. Without its presence, corrosion would advance in the cylinder liners, cooling ducts and other metal components, causing perforations, internal water leaks and loss of engine tightness.
When to replace this part?
Sacrificial anodes gradually degrade during each boating season, especially in warm, salty waters where corrosion is most aggressive. It is recommended to inspect the anode before each start of the season and replace it when it shows visible erosion greater than 50% of its mass, or when it has completed a full season of intense use. Preventatively replacing the anode before it is completely consumed prevents corrosion from transferring to critical engine elements, which would lead to costly repairs out of the water or while boating.
