Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the cathodic protection of Yamaha marine engines from 2.5 to 9 hp. Made of zinc, it acts as a galvanic barrier that degrades preferentially against the noble metal components of the engine, preventing electrochemical corrosion triggered by salt water and electrolytes present in marine environments. Without this protective element, the cylinder head, cylinder block and cooling pipes would suffer progressive oxidation that would compromise the tightness of the internal systems and the general functionality of the propulsion.

When to replace this part?

The anode should be inspected at the end of each sailing season and replaced when it has lost between 50 and 70% of its mass, indicating that its protective capacity is compromised. Indirect symptoms include visible rust on engine nuts, flanges and connections, presence of corrosion deposits in fresh water circuits, or accelerated degradation of exposed metal components. Preventive replacement before the start of the boating season guarantees total protection throughout the entire season of use in saltwater.
