Description
Function and technical context
The sacrificial anode is a critical component in the cathodic protection of Yamaha marine engines. Installed in the engine casing, it acts as a defensive barrier against galvanic corrosion generated by continuous contact between salt water and the metal alloys of the engine block. This component oxidizes in a controlled and predictable manner, sacrificing itself to prevent corrosion from attacking the internal surfaces of the engine, cooling galleries and aluminum components. Without a functional anode, seawater exponentially accelerates the deterioration of critical areas of the engine, compromising the watertightness and structural integrity of the block.
When to replace this part?
The anode should be inspected at the end of each boating season and replaced when it has lost more than 50% of its mass or shows visible signs of deep corrosion and brittleness. In salty waters or areas with high salinity, the degradation of the anode occurs more quickly, making it advisable to check its condition after every 100-150 hours of navigation. Preventatively replacing the anode before it is completely depleted prevents costly engine rust repairs and ensures that cathodic protection remains active throughout the season.
