YAMAHA ANODE 60-225 HP
Description
Function and technical context
The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the Yamaha marine engine cathodic protection system. Made of a reactive alloy, it degrades in a controlled manner to protect the metal parts of the engine—block, cylinder head, cooling pipes and internal components—against galvanic corrosion caused by salt or brackish water. This electrochemical process prevents oxidation from deteriorating critical engine structures, prolonging its useful life and maintaining the integrity of the cooling and lubrication systems. Without effective cathodic protection, corrosion advances rapidly in saltwater vessels, compromising watertightness, power and navigational safety.
When to replace this part?
The anode must be inspected at the beginning of each sailing season and replaced when it shows a visible reduction in volume or erosion of more than 50% of its mass. In salt waters with intensive navigation, it is advisable to change the anode every 12 months or after 200-300 hours of operation; In fresh waters or occasional use, it can last up to 18-24 months. Preventive replacement is the best practice to avoid cooling failures or water ingress on long cruises, ensuring that the engine always has a functional protection barrier against marine corrosion.
