Function and technical context
The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the cathodic protection system of Yamaha V8 marine engines. Made of zinc or aluminum alloy, it is installed in the submerged areas of the engine where it comes into direct contact with salt or fresh water. Its main function is to oxidize preferably against the metal parts of the engine, avoiding galvanic corrosion that degrades iron, steel and other noble metals in the block. Without this active protection, marine corrosion would advance rapidly on cylinder heads, exhaust manifolds, water pump housings and other surfaces exposed to the salt electrolyte, compromising the watertightness and structural integrity of the propeller.
When to replace this part?
The anode should be inspected at the end of each boating season and replaced when it shows advanced corrosion, loss of more than 50% of its mass, or deep pits. Unlike other consumables such as impellers or filters, anode wear is gradual but predictable: intensive saltwater sailing can deplete the anode in 12 to 18 months, while freshwater slows the process. The preventive change before wintering is the practice recommended by professional shipyards, as it guarantees maximum protection throughout the next campaign and avoids discoveries of advanced corrosion that would require costly repairs to the engine block.
