YAMAHA ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
The TEN01144 anode is a sacrificial part designed to protect Yamaha engine metal components against galvanic corrosion in marine environments. Installed in the engine casing, it acts as an electrochemical barrier, absorbing corrosion that would otherwise directly attack the engine block, cylinder head and other critical elements. This protection system is essential in outboard motors and salt water cooling systems, where salinity significantly accelerates the oxidation process of metals. Without adequate sacrificial protection, marine corrosion compromises the structural integrity of the engine, significantly reduces engine life, and causes costly leaks that can affect boat performance.
When to replace this part?
The anode must be inspected at the end of each navigation season and replaced when it shows visible erosion of more than 50% of its volume or when accelerated loss of material is observed. Unlike other components, sacrificial anodes erode in a controlled manner as a defense mechanism: if it is observed that the anode has been significantly consumed while the engine shows no external corrosion, the system is functioning correctly. The recommended practice in professional sailing is to replace the anode preventively at the beginning of each intense navigation campaign, thus avoiding repairs due to marine corrosion that can be very economically burdensome.
