Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is a critical component in the passive cathodic protection of Yamaha marine engines. Made of high-purity aluminum, it acts as an electrochemical barrier against galvanic corrosion generated by contact between different metals in a saline environment. This element degrades in a controlled manner, gradually being consumed to preserve the vital parts of the engine: cylinder block, cylinder head, crankcase and cooling systems. Without its presence, corrosion would advance rapidly on the cast iron and steel of the engine, compromising the tightness and structural integrity of irreplaceable components.

When to replace this part?

The anode should be inspected at the beginning of each boating season and replaced when it shows more than 50% mass loss or shows deep pitting and accelerated erosion. In high salinity salt waters or port environments with electrochemical contamination, degradation accelerates significantly, with a review recommended every 50-100 hours of operation. Replacing the anode preventatively is the most cost-effective practice: it prevents emergency repairs at sea and significantly extends engine life by stopping corrosion before it reaches critical components.
