Function and technical context

The rudder anode is a sacrificial part that protects the submerged metal structures of the outboard motor against galvanic corrosion caused by the interaction between dissimilar metals in salt or fresh water. Installed in the external cooling system, this component oxidizes in a controlled manner before the engine block, impeller or cooling pipes do so, thus preventing the progressive deterioration of these critical parts. Preventive wear is essential to maintain the structural integrity of the cooling system and extend engine life.

When to replace this part?

The anode should be replaced when it shows severe corrosion, visible loss of volume, or at the end of each boating season, especially if it has been used in salt water where the oxidation process is much more accelerated. A visual inspection during each seasonal maintenance can detect wear: if the anode appears severely eroded or has lost more than 50% of its mass, it is time to replace it. Preventatively changing the anode before it is completely consumed prevents corrosion from directly attacking the engine, which could result in costly repairs and surprises while boating.
