Description
Function and technical context
The sacrificial anode is a critical component in the cathodic protection of Yamaha marine engines. This metallic element is installed in areas of direct contact with salt water or fresh water, where it acts as a defensive barrier against electrochemical corrosion that degrades aluminum and other metals in the engine block, cooling systems and submerged components. Through a controlled galvanic oxidation process, the anode is preferentially consumed, preserving the vital parts of the engine from irreversible damage. Its function is essential in vessels that operate in saline environments or in water tanks with high ionic conductivity.
When to replace this part?
The anode should be inspected at the end of each boating season and replaced when there is more than 50% visible wear or surface erosion. If the anode is severely corroded, with deep pits or a significant reduction in its volume, it is a sign that the engine has been exposed to intense corrosive conditions and requires immediate replacement. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each marine campaign is the best practice to guarantee continuous protection and avoid costly repairs derived from severe corrosion in cylinders, cylinder heads and cooling circuits.
