Function and technical context

The aluminum anodes make up the cathodic protection system of the marine engine, acting as a defensive barrier against galvanic corrosion caused by salt water on submerged metal components. These elements work by sacrifice, preferably oxidizing the iron and steel of the engine block, transmission and cooling pipes, thus preserving the structural integrity of the propulsion unit. Its progressive and controlled degradation prevents perforations, internal leaks in the fresh water circuits and loss of tightness that would compromise the functionality of the engine and the safety of navigation in salt waters.

When to replace this part?

Aluminum anodes require visual inspection at the end of each boating season, detecting pronounced surface erosion, excessive thinning or layer detachment. Preventive replacement is advisable when they have lost between 50 and 70% of their volume, before their protective capacity is compromised. Performing the change early during pre-season maintenance avoids costly emergency repairs resulting from uncontrolled corrosion in cooling circuits, cylinder heads and valves.
