Function and technical context

Aluminum anodes make up the cathodic protection system in Yamaha outboard motors, where they are electrochemically sacrificed to defend internal and external metal surfaces against galvanic corrosion triggered by prolonged contact with salt or brackish water. This kit protects the engine block, cylinder head, heat exchanger and internal cooling circuits, preventing metal oxidation from deteriorating the seal of the gaskets, causing coolant leaks and reducing the operating power of the engine. The absence of adequate anodic protection accelerates structural degradation of the engine, compromising reliability during prolonged navigation and significantly increasing repair costs.

When to replace this part?

Aluminum anodes progressively erode during each boating season, especially in saline environments where electrochemical activity is maximum. It is recommended to visually inspect the condition of the anodes at the beginning of each season and replace the entire kit when erosion exceeds 50% of the volume or loss of visible material is seen on the surface. Performing the preventive change before the anodes are completely depleted avoids costly repairs due to internal corrosion of the block and guarantees the durability of the cooling system during demanding voyages.
