Description

Function and Technical Context

This sacrificial anode acts as cathodic protection in OMC outboard motors, including the Johnson and Evinrude lines, defending the motor's structural metal components against galvanic corrosion caused by saltwater, brackish water or freshwater action. Manufactured from zinc alloy, the anode corrodes preferentially, absorbing the electrochemical attack that would otherwise destroy critical components such as the motor housing, transom shaft or submerged metal surfaces. Its proper operation is essential to preserve the structural integrity of the power unit throughout the entire boating season. Directly replaces OMC manufacturer reference 984547.

When to Replace This Component?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at the start of each season and replaced when they have lost approximately half their volume or display an irregular, whitish or highly porous surface, unmistakable signs that their protective capacity is exhausted. As a general guideline, for vessels operating in saltwater or brackish water, it is recommended to replace anodes at least once per season; in freshwater environments wear is reduced, but periodic inspection remains essential. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely consumed is the most cost-effective measure to prevent galvanic corrosion damage to far more expensive components.
