Description
Function and Technical Context
This sacrifice anode for OMC 90 HP outboard motors acts as a cathodic protector, attracting the electrolytic corrosion that would otherwise attack the critical metal parts of the outboard motor: housing, propeller, shaft and other transom components. It operates within the galvanic protection system of the propulsion unit, progressively sacrificing itself to preserve the structural integrity of the aluminum and steel motor components. Its proper installation is especially important in saltwater or brackish water environments, where galvanic corrosion is significantly accelerated. Without an anode in good condition, the metal components of the motor assembly remain unprotected and can suffer irreversible damage within months, resulting in serious failures and costly repairs.
When to Replace This Part?
The clearest sign that the anode needs replacement is a reduction in mass of 50% or more compared to its initial size; when it is heavily worn, depleted or shows a completely irregular and hardened surface, it has ceased to perform its protective function. It is recommended to inspect the anode condition at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replace it at least once a year in saltwater areas, or sooner if wear demands it. Replacing it preventatively is one of the most economical and effective maintenance interventions to prevent corrosion damage to high-cost parts such as the trim shaft or motor housing.
