Description

Function and Technical Context

The sacrificial anode is the component responsible for protecting the submerged metallic parts of the outboard motor against galvanic corrosion, an electrochemical process that progressively destroys aluminum, steel and other metals in contact with salt or brackish water. Manufactured from an alloy with high electrochemical reactivity, the anode corrodes in a controlled manner instead of the motor's structural components, acting as a galvanic shield for the propulsion system. Its absence or excessive wear exposes the motor housing, propeller, shaft and other critical elements to accelerated degradation that can compromise the mechanical integrity of the propulsion assembly. In OMC 225 HP motors, proper cathodic protection is especially relevant given the volume of submerged metal mass and the demands of use in aggressive marine environments.

When to Replace This Part?

The clearest symptom of a depleted anode is the appearance of pitting, surface erosion or whitish discoloration on the submerged metallic parts of the motor, unmistakable signs that galvanic protection has ceased. As a general rule for outboard motors, it is recommended to inspect the anode at the beginning of each boating season and replace it when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, without waiting for it to be completely consumed. Replacing the anode preventatively with reference TEN00923 at the beginning of each season is the most economical measure to avoid costly propulsion group corrosion repairs.
