Description

Function and Technical Context

The sacrificial anode protects the metallic parts of the outboard motor against galvanic corrosion, acting as a consumable element in the cathodic protection system. Manufactured from zinc, this component oxidizes preferentially compared to the aluminum alloys of the engine block and lower gearcase, preventing corrosion from attacking costly structural components. Its proper installation is essential both in saltwater and brackish water, where the electrochemical differential between dissimilar metals drastically accelerates engine deterioration. Without a sacrificial anode in good condition, seawater silently and progressively degrades the motor foot, bushings and propeller, compromising the mechanical integrity of the assembly. This anode replaces reference 334451 (equivalent 0334451 → 0432397) and is compatible with the range of Johnson and Evinrude motors from 4 to 7.5 HP.

When to Replace This Part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a year, coinciding with seasonal maintenance, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, present a highly eroded irregular surface, or show visible cracks. On vessels that remain in the water continuously or navigate frequently in high salinity waters, inspection should be performed every six months. Replacing the anode preventatively before it is completely consumed is the most cost-effective measure to prevent corrosion in motor structural components, whose repair can far exceed the cost of the replacement part.
