Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes constitute the cathodic protection system of the outboard, acting as an electrochemical shield against galvanic corrosion that affects the submerged metal parts of the engine. Manufactured from magnesium (MG), these anodes are specifically formulated for vessels sailing in fresh or low salinity waters, where magnesium offers optimal electrochemical potential. Being less noble metals than aluminum or stainless steel in the engine, the anodes corrode in a controlled manner instead of the structural parts of the powertrain, protecting critical components such as the gearbox, propeller and anti-torque. This kit groups together all the anodes necessary for comprehensive protection of the high-end Suzuki outboard, preventing progressive corrosion that can compromise the mechanical integrity of the engine and lead to costly breakdowns.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that the anodes have exhausted their useful life is the reduction of their mass by more than 50% compared to their size: when the anode appears greatly reduced, with cracks or completely consumed, the cathodic protection is no longer effective and corrosion begins on the metal parts of the engine. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once per season—or every 100-150 hours of navigation—and replace them preventively at the beginning of each season if they show visible wear. Renewing the complete anode kit before they are used up is the most economical measure to avoid irreversible damage to the water box, tail and other structural components of the outboard.
