Description

Function and technical context

This aluminum anode acts as a sacrificial element in the cathodic protection system of the outboard motor, interposing its metallic mass between the water and the structural components of the powertrain to absorb galvanic corrosion. It works outside the engine, in direct contact with the aquatic environment - whether salt, brackish or fresh water -, protecting critical parts such as the casing, the shaft and other metal elements of higher value against electrolysis and oxidation. If this anode is consumed without being replaced in time, galvanic corrosion advances towards the structural parts of the engine, causing irreversible damage to components that require high repair costs. Aluminum as a material offers effective cathodic protection in salty and brackish waters, being the technically recommended choice for this environment.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode requires replacement is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the anode appears very reduced, fragmented or broken, it no longer offers sufficient protection. It is recommended that the sacrificial anode be inspected and replaced at least once a season—or every 100-150 hours of saltwater navigation—as its wear rate varies depending on salinity, electrical currents in the environment, and mooring time. Preventatively replacing the anode before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to avoid costly repairs to the motor's housing and submerged components.
