Function and technical context

This sacrificial anode made of aluminum is part of the cathodic protection system of the outboard motor, acting as an active electrode that corrodes in a controlled manner to preserve the structural metal parts of the propulsion group. It works in direct contact with water – both salty and brackish – and its function is to attract the electrochemical process of galvanic corrosion, thus protecting critical components such as the tail casing, propeller shaft and other submerged metal parts. Without a healthy anode, corrosion silently advances on the engine's base metal, causing structural damage that is costly to repair. Aluminum as a material is ideal for salt and brackish waters, offering effective protection in the most demanding navigation conditions.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has completed its cycle is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the aluminum block appears clearly reduced, irregular or with cracks, it has stopped properly protecting the engine. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the anode at least once a season—or every time the boat is taken out of the water—and replace it whenever it is worn by more than half its volume. Replacing it preventively at the beginning of each season is the most common practice among experienced skippers, since the cost of the anode is minimal compared to a repair due to galvanic corrosion in the tail of the engine.
