Function and Technical Context
The AMITA3 aluminum propeller, with a 9.30 inch diameter and 8 inch pitch, acts as the final link in the power transmission of 9 HP outboard motors, converting the rotational torque of the shaft into direct hydraulic thrust on the water. Its three-blade geometry and fixed pitch are designed to offer optimal balance between acceleration response and cruising efficiency in light displacement vessels: inflatable boats, recreational boats, zodiac vessels and small coastal fishing boats. The clockwise rotation—viewed from astern—makes it directly compatible with the standard single-engine configuration most commonly found in OMC, Johnson and Evinrude outboard motors. The high-strength aluminum alloy used in its manufacture combines structural lightness with sufficient toughness to absorb minor impacts, although any blade deformation alters the rotational dynamic balance and subjects the forward seal, shaft and gearbox bearings to unforeseeable vibration loads, accelerating wear.
When to Replace This Component?
The clearest indicators that the propeller has reached the end of its service life are: noticeable vibrations in the steering helm or transom that did not previously exist, inability to reach or maintain rated engine RPM, appreciable loss of top speed or acceleration, and persistent cavitation even in calm waters. Blades with notches, bends or surface erosion caused by impacts with rocky bottoms, submerged vegetation or sand are the most frequent cause of replacement in this power category. Visual inspection of the propeller is recommended at the beginning and end of each boating season; in the event of any deformation, however minor, preventive replacement is the most economical option in the long term, as operating with a damaged propeller can result in damage to the forward seal or transmission shaft whose repair cost far exceeds that of a new propeller.
