Description
Function and Technical Context
The propeller is the component that closes the energy cycle of the outboard propulsion system: it receives torque from the tail shaft and converts it into hydraulic thrust that propels the hull. This AMITA3 aluminum propeller, with a diameter of 10.3 inches, pitch of 12 inches and three right-hand rotation blades, is specifically designed for engines in the 35 HP range, where the diameter/pitch ratio must be adjusted with precision so that the engine reaches the working RPM within the maximum torque band specified by the manufacturer. Aluminum as a manufacturing material provides adequate rigidity for recreational and semi-professional use, absorbing minor impacts without transmitting excessive loads to the shaft or transmission bearings. A propeller with incorrect specifications—pitch too high or too low—causes chronic under-revving or over-revving, resulting in premature engine wear, high fuel consumption and loss of top speed. The three-blade geometry ensures a balance between thrust, acceleration pulling power and cruising speed efficiency.
When to Replace This Component?
Aluminum propellers are particularly vulnerable to impact with submerged objects, rocky bottoms or floating debris; a significant strike bends or fractures the blades, causing imbalance manifested as perceptible vibration in the steering bar or helm, sudden loss of speed and increased fuel consumption. It is advisable to visually inspect the blades at the beginning and end of each season, checking the leading and trailing edges for nicks, bends or loss of symmetry between blades, since even minor deformations alter hydraulic balance and accelerate deterioration of the tail shaft seals. Replacing the propeller at the first sign of deformation is always more economical than facing repairs to the strut, shaft or transmission bearings, failures that in many cases require hauling the vessel out of the water during peak season.
