Function and technical context

The impeller is a fundamental rotating component integrated into the water pump that drives the continuous flow of sea water through the internal galleries of the engine block to dissipate the heat generated during combustion. It works directly in the cooling system, filtering and distributing coolant constantly to the engine passages. Its correct operation is critical: a worn impeller drastically reduces water circulation, causing engine overheating, loss of power and, in extreme cases, seizure of internal components and irreversible damage to cylinders and cylinder heads.

When to replace this part?

The impeller shows characteristic wear when visible cavitations appear on its blades, loss of flexibility of the elastomer, notable reduction in the cooling water flow (detectable by a decrease in the discharge cock), or when the engine maintains abnormally high temperatures even when sailing at cruising speed. It is recommended to inspect and replace preventively every 300–400 hours of operation or, at a minimum, at the beginning of each boating season, especially if you have boated in waters with sediment or algae. Preventive replacement is a mandatory investment to avoid emergency shutdowns at sea and catastrophic repairs that can cost thousands of euros.
