Function and Technical Context
The cylinder head gasket is the sealing element located between the engine block and cylinder head, whose function is to hermetically seal the cylinders, coolant passages and oil galleries to ensure proper compression and sealed operation of the outboard engine. It operates directly in the combustion system and in the cooling and lubrication circuits, withstanding continuous cycles of extreme pressure and temperature. If this gasket fails or loses its seal, the engine may suffer loss of compression, water mixing with oil or severe overheating, situations that result in irreversible damage to the cylinder head and block assembly. This component, identified under number 319633 and its equivalent REC319633, is compatible with Johnson and Evinrude engines, as well as with Mercury/Mariner/MerCruiser references 802273 and OMC references 0319633 and 319633.
When to Replace This Component?
The most common symptoms of a worn cylinder head gasket in an outboard engine are: presence of bubbles in the coolant reservoir, white or bluish smoke in the exhaust gases, progressive loss of compression in one or several cylinders, and appearance of whitish emulsion in the crankcase oil. It is recommended to inspect the cylinder head gasket whenever the cylinder head is removed for any reason, after an overheating episode or as part of seasonal major maintenance.
