Function and technical context

The forward sprocket is a critical component of the transmission system in low-power outboard engines, responsible for transferring the rotation of the crankshaft to the gearbox and propulsion system. Integrated into the engine's kinematic chain, this pinion works under conditions of high mechanical stress and continuous exposure to the saline marine environment. Its correct operation is essential to guarantee the efficient transmission of power from the engine to the drive axle; Any wear or deterioration compromises the maneuverability of the boat and can cause loss of traction, slipping of gears or partial blockages of the propulsion system.

When to replace this part?

Symptoms of pinion deterioration include metallic noises or clicking in the gearbox area, difficulty engaging gears, abnormal vibration during propulsion or slipping under load. Although there is no fixed maintenance interval, it is recommended to inspect the condition of the pinion annually or every 100-150 hours of navigation, especially on boats that operate in waters with high saline content. Preventive replacement prevents unexpected breakdowns in navigation and prolongs the useful life of the rest of the transmission system.
