Description

Function and technical context

This zinc anode acts as a sacrificial electrode in the engine's cathodic protection system, preferably oxidizing to preserve the metal parts of the block, the heat exchanger and other components of the cooling circuit. When working in saltwater environments, marine engines are exposed to galvanic currents that progressively degrade noble metals; Zinc, being electrochemically more active, is consumed before any other alloy in the engine. Without adequate cathodic protection, corrosion silently advances on cooling plugs, casings and internal surfaces of the block, compromising the tightness and structural integrity of the assembly.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is a reduction in its mass by more than 50%, at which point it stops offering effective protection; In advanced cases, pitting or corrosion stains may appear on adjacent metal surfaces of the refrigeration circuit. It is recommended to inspect the anode during each seasonal maintenance - at least once a year - and replace it whenever its wear exceeds half of its volume, without waiting for it to be completely used up. Renewing the anode preventively before each sailing season is the most economical measure to avoid irreversible damage to higher-cost components.
