Function and technical context

The aluminum anode kit for trim tab acts as active galvanic protection in the steering and stern stabilization system of the outboard or sterndrive motor. The trim tab is permanently exposed to salt or brackish water, making it one of the most vulnerable points of the entire propulsion unit to galvanic corrosion. The aluminum anode included in this kit is electrochemically sacrificed in place of the noble metal components of the trim tab and bottom of the unit, preserving the structural integrity of the fin, shaft, and adjacent trim elements. Without adequate anodic protection, corrosion can compromise the functionality of the trim tab, directly affecting maneuverability, propeller performance and navigation stability.

When to replace this part?

Trim tab anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost between 50% and 60% of their mass, since below that volume they no longer offer effective galvanic protection. The most common symptoms of a depleted anode are the appearance of pitting or superficial corrosion on the trim tab itself, difficulty adjusting the trim angle or an irregular response of the engine when sailing at different speeds. It is recommended to preventively replace the entire kit at the beginning of each season on boats that operate in salt or brackish water, since the cost of the kit is minimal compared to repairing or replacing a trim tab fin or steering components damaged by corrosion.
