Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the elements responsible for protecting the metal parts of the outboard motor against galvanic corrosion, an electrochemical process accelerated by the presence of salt, brackish or mineral water. This specific kit for the powerhead—the power head or upper block of the outboard—concentrates protection right where critical metal components such as the cylinder block, covers and fittings are located, which if not protected degrade quickly. Made of zinc, these anodes are the ideal solution for use in salt and brackish water, since zinc has the appropriate electrochemical potential to act as a sacrificial metal in these environments. By "consuming" the anodes in a controlled manner, the rest of the metal structure of the engine is preserved, avoiding irreversible structural damage and costly replacement of major parts. The reference of this kit is REC90798-1M718.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that zinc anodes need replacement is the reduction in mass by more than 50% compared to the initial size: when the anode is greatly reduced or has an irregular, whitish surface, it has exhausted its protective capacity. If pitting, corrosion, or rust deposits are detected on the metal surfaces of the powerhead, it is likely that the anodes have failed or have been completely consumed. The professional recommendation is to check and visually inspect the anodes at the beginning and end of each nautical season - or every 6 months in intensive use boats - and replace the entire kit preventively before they run out; Changing them in port is infinitely more economical than repairing corrosion of the block at sea.
