Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are cathodic protection elements that prevent galvanic corrosion in the submerged and exposed metal parts of the motor unit. This aluminum powerhead anode kit is designed to protect the engine head and the upper structural components of the block against electrolytic attack caused by the potential difference between metals in contact with water. As they are aluminum anodes, they are especially suitable for use in brackish and marine waters of medium-high salinity, where they offer a more efficient consumption ratio than zinc anodes and more active protection than magnesium anodes. The absence or depletion of these anodes leaves powerhead components exposed to accelerated corrosion that can compromise the structural integrity of the engine and lead to costly breakdowns.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at the beginning and end of each sailing season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, have a very irregular surface, or have partially detached from their support. In boats that remain launched continuously or that frequently navigate in waters with high conductivity, wear can be significant in a few weeks, so monthly inspection is recommended. Replacing the complete kit preventively at the beginning of each season is common practice among naval mechanics, since the cost of the anodes is minimal compared to the cost of repairing or replacing engine block components affected by galvanic corrosion.
