Description

Function and technical context

The petrol filter acts as a protective barrier in the fuel circuit, intercepting solid particles, sediments and traces of water before they reach the most sensitive components of the fuel system. It works in line between the fuel tank and the pump or carburetor, ensuring that only clean petrol reaches the injectors or carburetor. A clogged or deteriorated filter can cause power cuts, progressive loss of power and, in extreme cases, serious breakdowns in the fuel pump or injectors, repairs whose cost far exceeds that of simple preventive maintenance. Its correct selection and periodic replacement is especially critical in marine engines, where ambient humidity and condensation increase the risk of water contamination in the fuel.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a clogged fuel filter include difficult cold starts, jerks or hesitation at cruising speed, unstable idle, and loss of thrust during acceleration. In marine engines, it is recommended to check and replace the fuel filter at the beginning of each season or every 100 hours of navigation, whichever occurs first, given that the marine environment accelerates the degradation of the filter element and favors the accumulation of water. Replacing it preventively is the simplest and most economical way to avoid a forced stop at sea due to power problems.
