Function and technical context

The complete tilt piston is part of the hydraulic trim and tilt system of the outboard motor, being the component responsible for converting hydraulic pressure into linear movement to raise or lower the propulsion unit. It works within the tilt/trim hydraulic circuit, continuously subjected to cycles of pressure, friction and exposure to the marine environment. When this piston shows wear, internal leaks or damage to the seals, the engine loses the ability to remain in the selected trim position, can descend slowly under load or simply stop responding to the electrical drive of the system, compromising both the navigation performance and the safety of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a tilt piston in poor condition are the progressive lowering of the engine during navigation (the trim does not maintain its position), difficulty in raising or lowering the outboard, loss of visible hydraulic fluid around the cylinder or slow and irregular response when pressing the trim controls. It is recommended to inspect the tilt hydraulic assembly at each seasonal maintenance, paying special attention to the condition of the seals and the fluid level; In engines subjected to intensive use, it is advisable to anticipate failure before a breakdown in the open sea forces you to sail with the engine stranded in a fixed position.
