Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the first shield of protection against galvanic corrosion on any boat with an outboard motor. Made of high-efficiency aluminum alloy, these anodes act as sacrificial metal: they corrode in a controlled manner to protect the noblest metal surfaces of the engine—such as the outboard body, propeller, and transmission components—from electrochemical attack produced by immersion in salt or brackish water. This kit is designed specifically for Suzuki outboard engines in the 200-250 hp range, covering all the cathodic protection points necessary for a complete boating season. Without adequate anodic protection, engine structural metal parts can suffer pitting, erosion and irreversible material loss, risking serious and costly breakdowns.

When to replace this part?

Anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass due to corrosion, since below that threshold their protective capacity is drastically reduced. In environments with high salinity or strong galvanic activity—for example, vessels anchored in ports with scattered electrical current—a review may be necessary every six months. Replacing the anode kit preventively at the beginning of each season is the simplest and most economical way to avoid structural damage to the engine that can involve repairs costing several thousand euros.
