Description

Function and technical context

The piston pin is the precision cylindrical shaft that articulates the connecting rod head with the piston, transmitting the combustion effort to the crankshaft inside the outboard engine. It works at the core of the piston-connecting rod group, at the heart of the engine's force distribution system, supporting extreme traction and compression loads in each ignition cycle. Its adjustment and condition are decisive for the tightness of the assembly and to guarantee that the piston moves rectilinearly in the cylinder without play or abnormal vibrations. A worn or excessive play bolt causes metallic knocking noises, loss of compression, increased fuel consumption and, in advanced cases, severe damage to the cylinder and connecting rod that can render the engine unusable.

When to replace this part?

The most characteristic symptom of piston pin wear is a dry, rhythmic knocking—known as “connecting rod knocking”—that intensifies during acceleration and cold idle; It can also manifest as unusual vibration in the engine block or progressive loss of compression in the affected cylinder. It is recommended to inspect the piston pin and its bushings during any piston grinding or replacement intervention, as well as in thorough checks every 400-500 hours of navigation or when symptoms of play are detected in the piston-connecting rod group. Replacing the pin preventively when rebuilding the piston assembly prevents accelerated wear of the adjacent parts and guarantees the reliability of the engine in high demand situations.
