Description

Function and technical context

The stern anode in aluminum disc with a diameter of 230 mm acts as sacrificial cathodic protection in the stern area of the boat, protecting it against galvanic corrosion that occurs when different metals coexist in an electrolytic medium such as seawater or brackish water. This type of disc anode is installed directly on the stern of the boat, covering exposed surfaces such as the mirror plate or the transom, forming an electrochemical barrier that concentrates the oxidation process on itself, thus preserving the structural integrity of the hull and the metallic elements of the propulsion assembly. The aluminum alloy with which it is made makes it especially suitable for salty and brackish waters, where it offers superior electrochemical activity than zinc anodes in high salinity conditions, guaranteeing effective protection throughout the nautical season.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that the anode needs to be replaced is if it has lost between 50% and 70% of its mass: at that point it no longer offers sufficient cathodic protection and the noble metals of the propulsion assembly are exposed to galvanic corrosion. As a general rule, sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season—ideally at each stranding—and replaced whenever they show wear greater than half their volume, regardless of the time elapsed, since the rate of consumption depends on the aggressiveness of the water and the time spent in the sea. Replacing the anode preventively at each annual tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to propellers, shafts, shaft anodes and metal structures of the stern, which are considerably more expensive to repair.
