Description

Function and technical context

This zinc anode for Gori propeller with a shaft diameter between 22 and 26 mm acts as sacrificial cathodic protection, interposing a metal with a lower electrochemical potential between the shaft, the propeller and the salt or brackish water. By preferentially polarizing, zinc corrodes itself rather than attacking the stainless steel, bronze or brass structural components of the drive line. Its correct presence on the shaft prevents galvanic pitting which, if it advances uncontrollably, can compromise the integrity of the drive shaft, the horn and the supports of the Gori propeller, putting the maneuverability of the boat at risk. It is an essential consumable in any nautical installation exposed to conductive media, especially in ports with high galvanic currents.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the zinc anode has completed its cycle is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, without waiting for it to disappear completely and leave the shaft unprotected. Shaft anodes must be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each sailing season, and replaced whenever material loss is greater than 50%, regardless of the time elapsed. Changing the anode preventively during the annual stranding is the most economical and effective measure to avoid severe galvanic corrosion that requires replacing the shaft or the entire Gori propeller.
