Description

Function and technical context

This hexagonal zinc anode for a 50mm shaft acts as cathodic protection, sacrificing itself electrochemically to preserve the boat's submerged metal components from galvanic corrosion. It works directly on the tail shaft, one of the most exposed elements of the propulsion system, protecting it from electrolytic attack caused by the potential difference between different metals in contact with water. Its hexagonal geometry facilitates assembly and uniform tightening around the shaft, guaranteeing stable electrical contact and a correctly distributed sacrificial surface. Made of aluminum alloy (AL), it is especially suitable for navigation in salty and brackish waters, where galvanic corrosion acts more aggressively on the shafts, propellers and horns. Without effective cathodic protection, the propulsion shaft can suffer pitting, loss of section and, in extreme cases, breakage, compromising the integrity of the entire shaft line.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the shaft anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has consumed between 50% and 70% of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, since its protective capacity is compromised. As a general maintenance rule, shaft anodes should be inspected and replaced at least once per nautical season, or more frequently if the boat remains in areas with high electrical conductivity of water or near port facilities with stray currents. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical practice to avoid costly damage to the shaft, horn or propeller, parts whose repair or replacement requires a much higher outlay.
