Description

Function and technical context

The Radice conical shaft for 60 shaft with zinc (ZN) protection is the component responsible for transmitting torque from the engine or transmission to the propeller, constituting the fundamental mechanical link of the boat's propulsion system. Its conical geometry guarantees a precise and secure fit between the shaft and the propeller hub, allowing force transmission without play that could cause vibrations, loss of propulsive performance or damage to the propeller and horn. The integrated zinc coating or protection acts as a sacrificial anode, protecting the shaft against galvanic corrosion in salt or brackish water marine environments, where submerged metals are especially vulnerable. A shaft in poor condition can cause misalignment, excessive hull vibration, accelerated wear of the stern bearings and even loss of the propeller while sailing.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a deteriorated taper shaft include abnormal vibrations noticeable in the hull or helm station, knocking or rubbing noises in the horn area, visible play between the shaft and the propeller hub when inspected out of the water, and spot corrosion or pitting on the surface of the cone. It is recommended to inspect the shaft at each seasonal landing, checking the condition of the cone, the integrity of the zinc protection and the alignment with the horn; If the loss of material due to galvanic corrosion exceeds 50% of the zinc section, replacement must be immediate. Replacing the shaft preventively when detecting the first signs of wear prevents serious breakdowns at sea and significantly reduces the cost of repairing the propulsion assembly.
