Function and technical context

Radice's 30 mm stainless steel zinc washer for shaft acts as a cathodic protection and sealing element in the boat's propulsion system, installing directly on the tail shaft between the hull and the propeller. Its sacrificial zinc core protects the shaft and adjacent metal components against galvanic corrosion, a particularly aggressive phenomenon in both saltwater and mineral-containing freshwater marine environments. The combination of stainless steel and zinc body guarantees mechanical resistance while serving as a sacrificial anode, preventing premature degradation of the shaft, horn or stern bearing. If this part fails or the zinc is completely consumed, the shaft is left unprotected and can suffer corrosion pitting that compromises the structural integrity of the entire transmission system.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes must be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each nautical season, and replaced when the sacrificial zinc has lost approximately 50% of its mass, presenting irregular edges, a severely eroded surface or an intense whitish color. If pitting or corrosion marks are observed on the 30 mm shaft itself, it is a sign that the washer has reached the limit of its useful life without having been replaced in time. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each season is the recommended practice by marine maintenance professionals, since the cost of a washer is minimal compared to machining or replacing a tail shaft damaged by galvanic corrosion.
