Description

Function and technical context

The Ø 25.4 mm (1 inch) light type shaft collar is a retaining and sealing component located in the boat's transmission system, whose main mission is to maintain the tail shaft in its correct axial position, avoiding unwanted longitudinal displacements during navigation. It works in the area where the drive shaft passes through the hull or stern support, acting as a fixing element that ensures the mechanical integrity of the drive assembly. Its lightweight design makes it especially suitable for installations where a low-profile component is required without sacrificing the robustness necessary to withstand the axial forces and vibrations typical of marine propulsion. A collar in poor condition can cause axial play in the shaft, abnormal vibrations in the propulsion line and even progressive damage to the stopper, the horn or the stainless steel shaft itself.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms indicating wear or failure of a shaft collar are perceptible axial play when manually pushing or pulling the drive shaft, unusual vibrations or rattles transmitted to the hull in motion, and accelerated wear of adjacent elements such as the stopper or horn. It is recommended to inspect the collar at each seasonal maintenance, checking for tightness, absence of galvanic corrosion and integrity of the part, especially on boats that operate in salt water. Replacing the collar preventively at the slightest sign of play prevents more costly breakdowns in the shaft line and unplanned stops in navigation.
