Description

Function and technical context

The aluminum alloy rudder disc anode acts as a sacrificial galvanic protector, absorbing electrolytic corrosion that would otherwise attack the structural metal parts of the rudder and the aft area of the boat. It works within the cathodic protection system, a passive but critical mechanism that preserves the rudder, shaft, and submerged stainless steel or bronze hardware intact. Its reinforced design with a 225 mm diameter provides a greater mass of active material compared to standard models, which translates into longer useful life and broader protection coverage on surfaces exposed to salt, brackish or high electrical conductivity water. If the anode is completely depleted without being replaced, galvanic corrosion is transferred directly to the noble metal it is intended to protect, causing pitting, structural weakening of the rudder, and costly shipyard repairs.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that the rudder anode needs replacement is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the disc has irregular edges, hollow areas or has been reduced to a thin core, its protective capacity is practically exhausted. It is recommended to visually inspect the anode at each beaching or at least once per nautical season, and replace it preventively at the beginning of each season if operating in salt waters or in port areas with high underwater electrical activity. Changing the rudder disc anode before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to prevent a galvanic failure from compromising the maneuverability and structural safety of the boat.
