Function and technical context

The reinforced Ø 225 mm zinc rudder disc anode acts as sacrificial galvanic protection, absorbing electrolytic corrosion that would otherwise attack the metal surfaces of the rudder and the structural components of the stern. It works within the boat's cathodic protection system, a passive but critical mechanism that is activated as soon as the hull comes into contact with water. Being made of zinc, it is especially suitable for navigation in salty and brackish waters, where electrochemical activity is more intense. Its reinforced design and 225 mm diameter guarantee a greater mass of sacrificial material, prolonging the effective protection cycle against smaller anodes. If this anode is completely consumed without being replaced, galvanic corrosion migrates to the rudder, sternpost, keel bolts or other submerged metal parts, causing costly structural damage and compromising the boat's maneuverability.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode must be replaced is a reduction in its mass of more than 50%, that is, when it visually appears very reduced, irregular or with completely consumed areas; At that point it has lost real protective capacity. Zinc rudder anodes should be inspected at least once a season, ideally at each grounding, and replaced preventively when wear exceeds half of the initial volume, without waiting for it to disappear completely. Replacing the anode before it is completely used up is the most economical measure to avoid repairing or replacing the rudder, a component whose cost is considerably higher.
