Description

Function and technical context

This pair of 165mm diameter magnesium (MG) rudder anodes is designed to protect the rudder and adjacent metal structures of the vessel through sacrificial cathodic protection. Being made of magnesium, they are especially suitable for use in fresh or low salinity waters, where this material offers the electrochemical potential necessary for effective protection against galvanic corrosion. The anode acts as a sacrificial electrode: it corrodes itself instead of attacking the noble metals that make up the rudder, buttress or hull, significantly prolonging the useful life of these structural elements. Without adequate anodic protection in the rudder area, galvanic corrosion can compromise the structural integrity of the blade and pinion, generating costly and potentially dangerous damage in navigation.

When to replace this part?

The rudder anodes should be inspected at least once a season, coinciding with the boat's docking or annual maintenance. The clearest sign that the time has come to change them is when the anode has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass, since from that point its protection capacity decreases drastically and the rudder is exposed to electrolytic corrosion. Replacing the anodes preventively each season is the practice recommended by professionals in the nautical sector to avoid structural damage to the rudder that requires high-cost repairs or replacements.
