ANODO TIMON PAR USA Ø 92mm (AL)
Description
Function and technical context
This aluminum rudder anode with a diameter of 92 mm is designed to protect the metal surfaces of the rudder against galvanic corrosion, one of the most destructive processes in vessels that operate in salt or brackish water. It works within the cathodic protection system of the stern, acting as a sacrificial electrode: the aluminum preferentially oxidizes, preserving the steel and other noble alloys of the steering assembly. Being a pair (two units), it provides symmetrical and uniform coverage around the rudder axis, guaranteeing effective protection throughout the exposed circumference. Without adequate cathodic protection, the rudder and its associated metal components can suffer from pitting, wall thinning, and structural failures that compromise the maneuverability and safety of the vessel.
When to replace this part?
Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season, ideally at each beaching or annual hull inspection. The unmistakable sign of exhaustion is when the anode has lost between 50% and 75% of its mass: at that point it has consumed its protective capacity and must be replaced immediately, before the next launch. If pitting, reddish rust marks or discoloration are observed in the vicinity of the rudder, it is likely that the anode has already ceased to fulfill its function. Replacing the pair of anodes preventively at the beginning of each nautical season is the most recommended practice to avoid costly damage to the rudder and steering system.
